Final Proposal

Aims:
In my documentary i want to talk about what it takes to become a model.  The main point i want to get across isn't about image but about talent.  I want to say why image isn't always important; sure it is important to always look your best in this industry but you shouldn't change who you are for someone because they don't like it or turn you down from a audition.  I want to say image isn't important as sometimes you are called for an audition but don't get the role because you aren't what the producer is looking for.   For example you might not have the right height, hair colour, eye colour etc. that they are looking for.  Sometimes the producer can see a models portfolio and talk to their agency about a casting which means they get the job without an audition.  I will get this point across with the help of young models who have been through this and i will also talk to some people who have written magazine articles that need models for their pages.  I will also talk to agencies as they will be able to tell me what it takes to become a model as they are the people behind the models who find them work and who will do well on their books.
Content:

throughout the documentary i will be explaining how to become a model with expert opinion and advice, for this i will need to interview people who know the industry for example i would like to interview top modelling agencies in London to see what they think it takes to become a model as they are the people behind the models who them find work.  I will get interviews from models that have been turned down from auditions and models who have been called for castings; doing this will allow me to prove my point to the audience of how you become a model and that it doesn't always matter about your image as the model might not be what the producer is looking for as they have someone similar in mind.  when i edit the footage i will make it as interesting and as aesthetically pleasing as possible, this will draw in the audiences attentions and make them want to watch it.  I will make it as aesthetically pleasing as possible by how i edit it; the transitions from shot to shot will be interesting so it isn't always the same and the audience get bored of it.  I will make the graphics suit who and what they are for; if they are for a person i will make it show either their job or the way they com across.
Target Audience:
The target audience for my documentary will be 16-20, i decided to make it between these ages as at the age of 16 you can leave school and either go onto college or get a job and finding a child's agency is difficult as they aren't as widely available as adult agencies.  For those who want to be a model may find it hard trying get into it, my documentary will show the audience how difficult it is to get into fashion modelling but the information i receive will help tell them and show them exactly what it includes and they will have names of agencies.  My target audience will watch the documentary and will have names of agencies and will see which one would suit them best and which one would help them to reach their goal of modelling.  they will also learn about auditions and castings and what is expected of them which will help the audience to see if modelling is really what they want to do.
Format:
The mode of my documentary will be participatory as i want to be able to get involved with what I'm doing rather than just interview and finding other examples.  As i want to be a model i will be able to speak of my experience as well.  By choosing participatory mode i can find out if the information i receive from certain people works so i can show to the audience what helps to become a model and which does nothing or prevents agencies from signing you.  Participatory mode allows me to investigate who knows more about modelling; the models, the writers, or the agencies.  By seeing who knows more helps the aspiring models to find out what works well for them and i can show the audience as i find out what  the best way to approach modelling is.
Genre:
My production will fit the genre of a documentary as i will have facts with real life experiences.  By having facts in my production i will be able to portray easily the style of a documentary, in documentaries most of the information given is either facts and figures which tells the audience an experts view or research on something that is accurate.  Peoples opinions are also give in documentaries as people want to know what other people think about something, for example an experts opinion would be helpful to someone watching my documentary as the audience will be able to believe what the person is saying.  I think that the topic i want to talk about will make a unique documentary as there haven't been that many and if there are they are based on pageants and catwalks.  which although give good information on them i want to talk about how to even come about being on a catwalk by starting off with agencies and famous young models.  Therefore i feel my topic for a documentary works well with the style i have chosen.
Style:
Camera work: when i film interviews i will set the camera up so its an over the shoulder shot so you can see the interviewee talking, doing this will allow the audience to see exactly who i am talking to what their reactions are to the questions im going to ask.  I will also film myself in certain areas talking about what i have learnt so far, in some of the shots i will be standing still or sitting explaining, in others i will be walking either towards the camera or walking to the next building i need to be in for the next interview.
Editing: When i edit my documentary i will make sure to make the shots fit together well to get the best result out of the footage and for the audiences benefit.  In the editing i will consider different transitions from shot to shot (fade, dissolve, cross-fade etc.)  By using these transitions my documentary will keep the audience interested as the shot wont just change from one shot to another in the same way.
Graphics: For the graphics i will make sure that peoples names suit their job or title; for example if they are a writer for a well known magazine i will have the font to resemble a typewriter to make it look different and new, their name will also appear on a magazine page introducing them as they would be a writer and the audience who may not know who they are will get from the graphics that they are a writer.  If it is a place or location that i am introducing then i may use their font for their logo (with their permission) so people recognise the font and know where i am.
Sound: For the start and end of my documentary i will have music playing so the audience have something to listen to whilst they read the information i give them on modelling, i will also have voice overs; if i give the audience a shot advert for video to watch i will talk over it telling them a bit about it.  I will also plan my questions so that i am prepared for the answer i will receive so i can think of something to reply with to help get the best answers i can.
I would like to use the style of BBC three Cinderella's of the slum's as i like the fact that Billie JD Porter gets involved to see what it would take her to become a model.  I like the way that she goes around meeting young girls wanting to be pageant winners to see what they have had to do to get as far as they have.  I will incorporate this with my documentary by asking agencies what i would have to do to become a successful model.
I will also take ideas from this documentary as Dr Suzannah Lipscomb uses facts with proof, she doesn't just tell you about it she also shows you how they know this.  Due to the facts i have in my documentary i want proof to show the audience the facts are true by backing them up with the actual proof i need to show them and explain the aims of my documentary.

Analysing the competition

What is the show's title?
The first show I will be talking about it Cinderella's of the slums which is a BBC three program presented by the model Billie JD Porter.  In the documentary Billie Porter goes to see what she would have to do if she wanted to win the contest, she also sees what some of the contestants do to achieve beauty and perfection.   Cinderella's of the slums was shown on BBC three on Wednesday 19th February at 9PM.  Cinderella's of the slums was shown at 9pm because of the content, showing this to a younger audience could give them the wrong idea and make them think that this is the correct way to be.  The show is similar to mine as I will be trying to find out what it takes to be a model and how you become a successful model.  In Cinderella's of the slums Billie Porter goes to find out what it takes to be the winner of the 15th birthday of the Brazilian debutant ball.  I will also be talking to people who want to become models and find out why they want to do modelling and find out from people who don't what they think of models or young models.  Cinderella's of the slums shows young women wanting to win the debutant ball and what lengths are willing to go to to win.
The audience are shown one girl who has mesh sown to her tongue so she cant eat solids to keep her weight down; she can only eat soup and drink water.  Some parents are willing to pay £100,00 just so their daughter stands a chance of winning.  I think my program would get more viewers because it is showing young people how to get into modelling, so its based in this country and it gives them actual information on it whereas in Cinderella's of the slums it tells people the lives the contestants live to try and become the winner and it shows the audience how much families are willing to pay for their daughters to win to have a better life.

What is the shows title?
The Model Agency is about the offices at premier model management to show the audience what it is like in this industry.  The show will be looking into what it takes to make it in this industry, the founders and Carole White and her brother Chris Owen are the leaders in this seven-part series.
The model agency is shown on Channel 4 on Mondays 10pm.  It started in February and is on weekly.  The model agency is on at 10pm as their target audience will watch this at this time, showing it after the watershed allows them to have items in there that they wouldn't be able to show before; if they have to advertise a certain item of clothing they want to make sure they don't show it too early.  The audience that watch the model agency can see first-hand what happens behind the scenes for model and their agencies, wanting to be a model and not knowing what happens to get you auditions or castings can be confusing so watching this people can see exactly what happens.
The similarities between my documentary and the model agency is that I will be looking into what it takes to become a successful model and what you have to be prepared for.  In the model agency they show you what goes on in the offices of one of the biggest modelling agencies.  Although this show looks at a certain amount of models and seeing how well they do and what it's like for them, i too will be talking to one or two models to see how they got into the business and what sort of work they prefer to do whether it is photography or filming.
I think because my documentary will be talking about one specific item I think it will help the audience if they want to do modelling as I won't be talking about several different things and I won't be focusing on what happens in the modelling agencies offices as I dont think that will help people who want to be models.

What is the shows title?
The face is a show about young women who want to be the new face of a major brand company. the mentors select a team of four models that they believe have what it takes to become the new face of a major make up brand.  Each week the models have to compete in an overall challenge.  Over the course of the series the models have to take part in different competitions for clients which can be shoots, commercials or runway shows.
The face is shown on Sky living wednesdays at 10pm.  I think they put the show on sky living as most people have sky therefore more people can watch it as if they arent going to be around at that time they can record it to watch it later whereas if it was on another freeview channel people wouldnt be able to record it.
The time the show is on allows certain audiences to watch it, if the show was on any earlier or later they wouldnt be able to get the same response from it or they wouldnt be allowed to show certain things due to the timing of.   I dont have many similarities with this show and mine as in my documentary i will be looking into how to become models and what you have to do to make it successful, whereas the face makes the models compete to win being the new face of a major make up company.  I will take ideas from this show as the models have to either do shoots, commercials or runways so i can then ask my models what they prefer or if they dont want to do one of them for a reason.  In my documentary i will try to answer the questions that new young models want to know but dont have anyone to ask or think that their question isnt important.  The face doesnt really show models how to get into it they just show them the sort of thing hey will be doing whilst in the industry.  Although the face shows the models doing certain challenges aspiring models who are watching may think that that is what it is going to be like.  I think my documentary will have more viewers than the face's viewing figures because my documentary will help people get to that stage where they could be the face of a big makeup company; because my documentary will talk about how to get into modelling i think this will help the audience as they will be watching it because they will want to know what agencies look for or what the model industry want.

Five Key Questions

1) What do agencies look for in a model?
Some models are lucky enough to be scouted by agencies whilst they are out and about but most aspiring models need to work really hard to get where they want to be.  'Models need to make a good impression on a wide range of people as part of their work so you'll need to be polite, professional, prompt and  respectful to progress in the industry.'
The link below talks a bit about different things models need.  A brief introduction into the article is given before it talks about four different topics; The first is qualities which talks about what models need to be to do well it also talks about Portfolios and agencies which mentions the different style photos you need so anyone wanting people for auditions or castings can see what you look like and whether you are what they are looking for.  Agencies are also one of the most important a model needs as the agencies are the ones who tell you about auditions or castings that you are wanted for, without this you cant really go to auditions or castings. Lastly is talks about discipline; this lets you know what sort of things you will have to do to make sure you stay healthy and looking your best so you stand a better chance at modelling.  This website is useful as it gives informative facts in a small amount so you know roughly what agencies look for which will help aspiring models.

2)Why do some models prefer to do adverts rather than photography work?
Some models prefer to do adverts as they allow them to act to be different characters whereas in photography work they can only be themselves and don't get the chance to be someone else.  Also doing adverts gives models the chance to show other agencies or advert makers or people who want photography can see exactly what they are like and how they act and what they can do.  When doing and advert for the TV or online models get paid more for it as they may need to film over a number of days whereas if its photography work you don't get paid as much as you may only need to be in the studio for one day.  The more hours you work the more the model gets paid.  Although models are always interested in the money its fun to do adverts as you get to meet new people that you might not have net if you do photography work.

3) When is a good time to start modelling?
I thought the best time to start modelling is when you a little kid or when you're about to leave school as this way you would be able to of been doing it for a while and are used to the surroundings or you would have something to fall back on by just leaving school.  This website however says that it is best to start modelling at the age of 18 as (being a model herself) she knows that it is also good to have a back up plan if modelling doesn't go as well they hoped it would.  Ruth Crilly (The model who wrote the information) says that when she is asked by young girls about modelling she says that she thinks it better for aspiring models to know know who they want to be so they are less likely to be persuaded by the media on how they think models should look.  The information Ruth Crilly gives is helpful as she lets people know what she thinks about models and that you shouldn't start it too young as some people may feel that if they are told to change their image they are more likely to do so at a younger age as they feel the need to fit in more.  As she is a model she knows the harshness of the business and what is required to make it as she knows she needs to be herself and not let people change her.

4) Is modelling seen as girly?
Female models get paid more
Most people think modelling is girly because of hair, make up and clothing but people forget that males can be models as well other wise we wouldn't have anyone to model men's clothing.   This picture shows the amount the top ten male and female models get paid, female models get paid more a lot more than male models which has lead people to believe that modelling is more for girls as they get paid more for it.  An editor says that the reason female models are paid much more is because 'With more adverts needing women, there are More opportunities for models.  This means to attract top female modelling talent, you need to pay more, since there are and abundance or other opportunities.'  This means that because more female models are needed they are willing to pay more as male models aren't needed for as many adverts so they don't need to be paid more.

5) What do people who don't want to be models think?
Some people believe that modelling is fake and that everyone gets photo shopped or air brushed but not all models do.  Some magazines do like their models to be a size zero and look at flawless as they can possible make them but for the companies who just take the photos and maybe change one or two things prove that not all models are fake. Some models are photoshopped to appear perfect to appeal to the audience more which leaves people to believe models are fake and that anyone could do it.  Not all models are changed some just have make up done which most women wear which people think is wrong.  People say modelling is easy as you just have to stand there and be told what to do but models work long hours and they can start early and finish late; just like any other job modelling is tiring.  When agencies make their models eat hardly anything they don't have the energy from the food so they get tired quickly.
